From the article: Best SUV Deals for 2010
Every year, I compile a list of the best deals on SUVs and crossover vehicles. In order to be considered, a vehicle must have current (as of December 2009) availability. Beyond that, the criteria are completely subjective -- my assessment of price-to-value, vehicle quality, desirability and overall excellence. In the spirit of utility, the list is broken into segments: Full-Size; Mid-Size; Compact; Fuel-Efficient; Most Reliable; Luxury; and Family Friendly.

Now it's your turn: Which SUVs and crossover vehicles make your list for the Best Deal of 2010? Share Your List

SUV Requium

I have been watching the SUV market for several years after owning Land Rover Discoveries and Ford Suv's. I have a 2003 Excursion Turbodiesel 7.3, and a 2007 Explorer Limited. If I had to replace the Explorer I would be confused by the AWD vs 4WD in the new Explorer. I prefer to choose the drive train, not be limited to a FWD with some RWD capability. We do off roading on CO trails and I do not want my truck to be selecting while it is climbing a steep grade. Land Rover was an expensive toy and got terrible mileage, so the Ford/Land Rover system on the new Explorer does not appeal to me. I drove a Mazda CX9 and it was very comfortable and quick; I did not test the off road capability. If Ford had the 6 cyl with the 6 speed transmission and the Boost system, I would be interested, but that will be awhile. I try to avoid the GM and Chrysler products due to previous bad experiences. The Mercedes SUV's are wonderful if you don't need to ask the price. Ford, give us a diesel SUV!

Ford Explorer 2010 is the last of the true Ford SUV line. The Limited model offers all the amenities and does the off road trails too.

Mazda CX-9

Bought it 3 months ago. Handles like a sports car, lots of high tech features, solid construction. Love it!

Impressed by GM

Unlike Jeff R, I am *not* a GM loyalist, but I've been really impressed with their latest crossovers. The Chevy Equinox is one of the best GM products to date; it shows a company that's trying its hardest. And the Chevy Traverse/GMC Acadia make excellent use of the CUV concept, with big back doors and decent acceleration from (relatively) small engines. If I were shopping for a CUV in today's market, I think I'd be buying domestic.

Hyundai Tucson is a smart buy

Great looking SUV with a bang for the buck, I would definitely buy one

The Santa Fe gets my vote.

I like the Hyundai Santa Fe. It's reasonably attractive, powerful, comfortable, reliable, and useful. And the price is tough to beat. If I were in the market for a new SUV, I'd look at it first.

My picks

Before I start, I'll admit I am a GM loyalist. That being said, I'll be as straight as I can, and provide logic for all my choices, and keep some variety. Jason's reviews provide help where I don't have much knowledge of the class. Full-Size - Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. A little pricey, but gets over 20 MPG. Mid-Size - Ford Flex. Ecoboost, 7 passenger seating, and cargo room. Compact - Mazda CX-7. Zoom-Zoom. Enough said. Fuel Efficient - (tie) Ford Escape Hybrid and Chevrolet Equinox. The Escape offers better City mileage than most cars. The Equinox has much better highway than any SUV (including the Escape). While overall mileage goes to the Ford, the lower base price of the Chevy balances out the value side. Most Reliable - Honda CRV. Deferring to Jason's research. Luxury - Land Rover Range Rover. The original. Family Friendly - Chevrolet Suburban. More available passenger capacity (9) than anything this side of a bus, and still has room to carry luggage.
