Mercedes-Benz gave three of their SUVs a polish for 2013: The exclusive G-Class, the compact GLK-Class and the full-size GL-Class. The GL-Class made our Top Five because Mercedes-Benz calls it “the leading luxury full-size SUV,” and its makeover is significant.
There are three variants of GL for 2013: The GL350 BlueTEC, which is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel (240 hp/455 lb-ft of torque); The GL450, equipped with a 4.7-liter gasoline V8 turbo (360 hp/406 lb-ft of torque); and the GL550, which gets the same V8 tuned to produce 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
Mercedes has a suite of electronic safety features, many of which will be available on the GL for the first time, including Collision Prevention Assist, Crosswind Stabilization, Active Blind Sport Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. The new GL goes on sale in the United States in September 2012, with pricing to be announced.
