The definition of "affordable" has to be flexible with the times. Once upon a time, not so long ago, "affordable" when applied to SUVs meant "under $10,000." Those days, sadly, have faded away, like your favorite bellbottom jeans.

Once I assembled all of the contenders for The Best Affordable (Under $50,000 Base Price) Large SUVs, a winner jumped out immediately. It had to do with all around utility, not with any one feature or capability. But it was not difficult to decide, even in a group of vehicles with spec sheets that nearly match inch for inch.
