VIN etching for cats

Monday September 8, 2008
Somebody's trying to do something about catalytic converter theft -- finally.

As you know if you've been reading these pages, my 1994 Toyota 4Runner, Moose, was the victim of catalytic converter theft a few months ago. I blogged about it here, and hundreds of you have responded with your tales of woe.

Well, the AAA has started sponsoring VIN etching events out here in Southern California, where you can bring your SUV to a central location and get the Vehicle Identification Number carved into your catalytic converter with a special etching pencil. It won't keep thieves from taking your cat, but at least the police will have a better chance of cracking the crime. A scrap metal dealer who buys an etched cat had better have a good explanation for where it came from, or he's going to be liable for trafficking in stolen goods.

It's a start, and a very positive one. Thanks, AAA.
