Chrysler's $2.99 Gas Guarantee?

Wednesday May 21, 2008
I have listened to the ads on the radio for a few weeks now, and I have to admit, I don't really get it. What is Chrysler's $2.99 Gas Guarantee?

According to the Chrysler website, the program is called "Let's Refuel America!" and here's how it works:

  1. Buy or lease a qualifying 2008 or 2009 Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep® vehicle.
  2. Select the MasterCard or Visa credit card to use for the program.
  3. Receive a Let's Refuel America card that you will use to buy gas.* Each year for the next three years, you will receive an allocation of gallons to use.
  4. Fill up. In each of the next 3 years, when buying fuel with that card, your credit card will never be charged more than $2.99/gallon for qualifying puchases – regardless of the price at the pump.

You can only buy enough $2.99 gas to drive 12,000 miles per year, so don't get any bright ideas. All Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge SUVs and crossover vehicles are included in the program, except SRT models, Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. Chrysler claims that the program is valid at about 97% of all gas stations in the United States.

For some reason, that's still clear as mud. But if you believe, as I do, that gas prices are going up and staying up for good, then this program could save you a few dollars over the next three years.

What’s not to get? Your purchase the qualifying car, get the credit card, & pay $2.99 at the pump for 12 months or 12,000 miles whichever comes first. Then you wait for your annual date to mature & you continue to do $2.99 for 12mos or 12,000, then you do it for a third time. Of course, you don’t have to ever use the card say if gas is $2.50 per gallon. I get it & I haven’t even seen my local Chrysler dealer!
