You Just Don't Understand...

Tuesday September 19, 2006
A good friend is considering moving from New York City to Los Angeles, and she recently called me to ask for some advice about transportation. It's been years since she has owned a vehicle, and she's trying to decide between a new or used SUV.

First, I pointed her toward my article on buying a new SUV. Then, I reminded her about a few of my favorite books: Joe Girard's How to Sell Anything to Anybody and Herb Cohen's You Can Negotiate Anything. She reminded me that she's a very spiritual person, very much into yoga and meditation, so I recommended Joel Edelman and Mary Beth Crain's The Tao of Negotiation.

What she really wants, as it turns out, is for me to find an SUV for her, arrange the terms, and make sure she gets a good deal.

I can do that. Maybe I should reread the book that she recommended: Deborah Tannen's You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation.
